Timber Decking

S. Bretherick Handyman Services was asked for advice about a new look for a customer’s garden. Decking was eventually chosen as an ideal solution and the customer decided to pay extra for GripDeck® antislip decking which has a 5 year warranty for the performance of the antislip strips.

Extra care needed to be taken during the preparation of the site due to the presence of gas and electric services and so the holes for the deck support posts were all dug by hand with a trowel before the posts were concreted in place.

Heavy duty weed suppressing membrane and a layer of 10mm gravel was laid down before 6” x 2” joists were used to construct a strong framework with noggins added to give extra rigidity. Additional framing needed to be included to allow removable sections of decking to be fitted to provide access to drain covers.

The deckboards were fastened using Spax Wirox decking screws which have an excellent resistance to corrosion and the small, cylindrical head allows for a neat fixing into the grooves of the deckboards.

The addition of handrails and balustrade, with contemporary square spindles, completed the installation. Preservative, pressure treated timber was used throughout for a long service life.
